I have decided to make today Andrew Lundwall Day at Joe Brainard's Pyjamas.
Because I liked his e-book Windmilling that he sent me, and because he's a pretty stand-up guy.
I tried to cut and paste a poem ("Recovery" was my druthers), but the PDF file wouldn't allow me to!
I think you can download this book at Goodreads.com for free...not sure..
If you see Andrew today (in Illinois or online) be sure to pat or cyber-pat him on the back and acknowledge that this is his day. (You might say something like this: "Whoa, Andrew, I hear this is YOUR DAY at Joe Brainard's Pyjamas!")
And Andrew, being ever the gentleman, and modest, will say something like "Oh, yeah, thanks man..."
I like Andrew's springy, resilient poetic line and deftly unabashed confessional verve....he's sort of turning O'Hara-ish lately, and I like it...
Here is a very cool poem that reminds me a bit of Ceravalo...has that great polymorphously perverse roll in the hay of language like Ceravolo would do...but the poet makes it his own...this is from Shampoo, a delish online poetry mag...
Shake Hands, Flip-Flop
shake hands
flip-flop like
accepting the gut
of the night
opening eyes
to the night
opening eyes
to the gut of water
over the sound
of water over
the glass tonguing
the ball drop
And I found this poem very moving and very beautiful...props to the maker....i find most love poems today to be so boring or contrived or unfelt...i find this poem none of these things...I think it's very genuine and memorable...notice how deftly and subtly that closing couplet promises everything a lover wants to hear...probably two of the most beautiful lines I've read in about a year...
Because
has it ever occured to you
that it's all of this
that this is as violent
as i don't know
the movie rental is late
in the geography
of your blinking eyes
his icicles are your icicles
this is called treatment
it is a room deranged
in a very large building
so sterile that it's obscene
relax no one's ever doubted you
everyone's omnipresent
because they are always
nowadays wearily waiting
for the world to end
ok nothing helps
i'm concerned too
i'll keep the world out
if that helps any
CARPE DIEM ANDREWLUNDWALLENSIS!

WINDLESS VALENTINE
When I sit in the bathtub
I can listen to the clock
when I lie on the bed
I can put on your old hats
I can watch a starling stumble
trying to reach the feeder
his own size excludes him
he takes what others drop
but what will I do now
with this king-size bed
this empty sky
we barely slept in
your music sheets stacked
still playing against me?
starlings and grackles, grackles and starlings, make my evening...
i see hawks all the time lately...
there is an evil one on my drive to work...right near the old state hospital grounds (dorothea dix territory)...where these poor pigeons flock and perch on the phone lines...and he's down at the end just staring at them most days...
like picking your lobster out of the aquarium at the seafood restaurant....
one gets a strange urge to prune nature...
what did the poet marion cohen write oh so many years ago?
"if nature WERE a mother, it would be survival of the sweetest..."
Peter, I have to go to a viewing tonight..she was a wonderful woman...
but i don't want to see her dead...
this is so going to put a crimp in my evening...
canadian distillers, get me ready...
(re deleted comment...i had to delete and retype as i had the marion cohen line wrong by one word the first time...)
i feel very honored, bill...thanks!

FUNERAL BREAKFAST VALENTINE
Doesn’t pissing sound like time
dribs and drabs
or a great rope
of steaming gold
but only half of love
is my desire for you
more to do with me
than how you kill
still if it’s February
who picked these strawberries
and this ripe banana
please come back
I’ve juiced one of my cold
oranges over the top.
LOL Andrew...i already ate the cake and ice cream...soz!
Thanks for the link...i will have check out ryan shortly too...
