lots of people have sued james cameron. he can afford it....

but can you name the artist who sued Cameron over an appropriation made in the film Titanic...and who got a HUGE settlement out of him right before he won those Oscars?

it was truly surprising to me. the suit was actually brought because one of the drawings Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio's character) did in the film was based on a work by this artist...(which is actually a photograph)....

i thought this was funny because the drawings in Titanic were laughably awful and undistinguished...like those awful sepia figural drawings in a "learn to draw" book you buy for 1.99 at kmart.

but because they were dumb enough to base one of the drawings on a known work (which was so unnecessary it's ridiculous) they ended up shelling out a nice little xmas present for this artist....

oh and Harlan Ellison also successfully sued Cameron. for a different film. one guess which one.

you can find the answer here to my first question, about the Titanic litigation. what a great xmas present Cameron gave her...i bet the family laughed like hell...

The luckiest little girl in Virgina in 1997!

other appropriations in the film according to artnet...

TITANIC BLUNDER

"Director James Cameron has been taking credit as author of the drawings supposedly done by Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the blockbuster movie Titanic. Now, according to a report by John Bowe in New York Magazine, at least three of the drawings appear to have been copied from well-known photos -- Bijou of Montmartre by Brassai, Rodney Plogger at 6:01 by _____ _____ and Georgia O'Keeffe, Hands, 1920 by Alfred Stieglitz. The article suggests that ____ has already reached some kind of accommodation with the famed director and that Gilberte Brassai, the photographer's widow, is in France and unlikely to take legal action. U.S. copyright has expired on Stieglitz works, since he died more than 50 years ago."
