Congratulations Kavya Shivashankar!

You deserved that win!

The best spellers aren't only amazing memorizers (although they are that too!) but know the real origins of the words.

Kavya demonstrated again and again she knew the Greek roots inside-out!

Great performance in 2008 and she vindicated herself with a win this year!

Kyle Mou came in fourth and went out on a ridiculous word that dodged the usual etymologies.

I would have missed that too: "schizaffin."

Ugh!

The runner up went out on "Maecenas." Of course, literary readers of this blog will know that one and wouldn't have missed it!

I could use a Maecenas (or two or three).

I love watching the spelling bee. What about that sassy young boy this year, the one signing autographs? His father was cute. And, because I only caught a few minutes of it, I didn't get to really have a favorite, losing syntax, I enjoyed watching the young women and men spell.

Hi Juice.

The Bee is all about sassiness.

I loved it when the one girl, who (correctly) suspected she had spelled the word wrong, said "ding" sarcastically at the end of her attempt.

And this one:

Pronunciation Matron: "Do you see the clock?"

Harried Girl Speller: "Yes. It's a very lovely clock."

"Spellbound" is a great documentary about the National Bee.

I think it's from 1999.

I'm sure it's available through Netflix.

It's a hoot.

I remember the "Ding" girl. She was my favorite. I think I've seen Spellbound but I might be getting it confused with that documentary about Crossword Puzzle Championships. I don't know if this is new this year (or in the past few years), but I don't remember kids' parents being up on stage with them when I watched the Bee growing up. I've wanted to be a spelling bee champ ever since I was too old to be eligible.
