What can we learn from this video?
1) That it's good to get thrown in prison at 14. It turns you into a hottie with a boyish pout (see around 2:13).
2) That Mayakovsky didn't study poetry in a workshop.
3) That if you're a poet, don't go into advertising or you will end up blowing your brains out (it doesn't matter if it's advertising for some industry or the government and its latest ism, as with M.). Writing message poems will kill the poem-erection FAST! And--as far as I know--they don't make Poem-Viagra yet.
4) The narration of this documentary is a tad hyperbolic. Mayakovsky was not the one most "without antecedents" in that period. And they rightly peg him as ultimately a very experimental, LYRIC poet. The distinction of going beyond that belongs to poets like Khlebnikov and Kruchenykh, along with other futurists.
5) Russian poets all seem to read their poems in Bela Lugosi's voice.
