Today is St. Jerome's Day

I like learning what Saint's Day it is on ETWN each day.

Today is St. Jerome.

He was sassy.

He was known for his foul temper and his mouth.

They read some of his more sarcastic passages today on ETWN.

I could only think of him in his Study (the famous painting) but now I have a fuller picture of him.

Makes sense he is the patron saint of librarians.

And then there's the lion thing.

There was a good discussion about Angels today too.

You probably have very wrong ideas in your head about Cherubim.

I know I did.

I like Mass when Father Mitch presides.

Father Corapi freaks me out.

He's the ex-military Father on ETWN.

The voice alone is enough to scare me.

I expect him to come out in camouflage for one of his sermons.

I Took a Brief Detour Through Hell

I have been ill lately, so apologies for the light blogging.

I have been buoyed by a few spirits and owe them thanks: first God, then God's emissaries and Agents, then Ruth (not Ruth in the Bible) and Thank You Gerald.

I have never seen any of their faces, but each did something to help save my soul.

There are other people. Good doctors and nurses. Kind people. Their faces I know.

I am so glad I am in recovery with no temptations to relapse, but being ill and not knowing really what's happening with one's body is weird...and frightening.

I feel God has been merciful.

Strangers have been so kind to me.

I still feel I may die suddenly. My body is doing weird things that the tests say it shouldn't be doing.

"Why are you bleeding like this if you're not anemic and your platelets are normal?"

"I don't know. Vasculitis?"

Dermatographism, bleeding under the skin, other weirdnesses....I hate mirrors.

My TSH is down to 5 point something which is just the high end of normal (the old values...actually 3 is the new high "normal") but I fear this might just be a "blood trick." If the T4 isn't converting to T3, all one is doing is making a "cosmetic" change in a blood test. Hypothyrodism will continue its destruction. This is why some endocrinologists and patients swear by Armour (it has the T3 already present as a component). And some endocrinologists hate the generics (which I'm taking).

I'm wondering if this is what's happening with me as many of my symptoms could still be hypothyroid-related.

And then some hypothyroid people online tell you it takes "ages" to get back to normal. So I try to have faith that's what it is.

But I think something else is wrong. Viral. Cancer. I don't know. I'm not the President. I can't have all the tests.

Now on Lorazepam (spelling?) for the panic attacks but I don't think that dosage works.

I need an attorney too. The makers of Depakote fucked me up bad. I really want to address this legally as I feel I was totally misled by the literature they presented on side effects. This has totally impacted my quality of life.

I wonder if I have Sjogren's. Some of my weird symptoms match up with that and that's something I haven't been tested for yet.

The things I have been tested for is now a very, very long list.

I wonder if I see things like the Sign of Leser Trelat on my body sometimes.

It's so wrong that I even know what the Sign of Leser Trelat is.

That really fucks my head up.

I'm at that stage where the tests have begun to go genetic. That's not usually good.

This week my blood had to go from Harrisburg to Labcorp in Delaware then one of the tests had to be run at a special Labcorp facility in North Carolina, I think. Another state anyway.

One selfishness I allowed myself was ordering two books and they each held as much balm as I had hoped they would: Katy Lederer's The Heaven-Sent Leaf and The Collected Poems of Ted Berrigan (gotta love that "Train Ride" with Joe Brainard.)

I've even come to indulge (and like--yoicks!) Cleveland Amory.

I went out today because I had to stop at a church and then I stopped at a thrift store.

I bought new pants and belts because nothing fits me anymore.

Lee thought I was stupid when I cried when I put on my sweat pants from last winter and they fell to the floor.

I don't step on scales because it's not a pride thing. It's about illness.

I was surprised the weather had changed. I'm afraid of autumn and winter coming when I feel like this.

I stared at the sky when I came out of the store around sunset. It was one of those silently (what, clouds talk?) and slowly roiling contusion-blue skies that bodes October. I haven't looked at a daytime sky in ages, it seems. I'm turning agoraphobic again.

Everything was half price in the store tonight. I got lucky.

Here's what I got for twelve dollars: 3 pairs of pants and two belts (one decent Eddie Bauer one), a plastic pink elephant watering can, an Eames era tribute pitcher with clover motif, a Peanuts book, a Beatrix Potter book where the pictures change when you pull tabs, a tiny Ice Cream Maker shaped like an ice cream cone circa 1970 something in original box with ephemera included, a book of fairy tales from around the world, a huge pristine Chantal spoon rest, a little watercolor painting of a boat on an empty beach, a foil seascape picture (like a metal postcard) from the sixties, some other books I can't remember now and some other things I can't remember now.

I think I was suffering a bad B12 and B vitamin deficiency because some symptoms associated with B12 deficiency seem to have momentarily vanished since I started taking multivitamins loaded with the stuff.

I think that's a problem with hypothyroidism.

And I didn't realize my body probably hasn't been able to convert many other great vegetables I've been eating.

Hypothyroidism really fucks you up.

I've probably been hypothroid for a decade or more.

When you're a mess who feels immortal you don't notice these things.

When you decide to live on earth again the drag coefficient can be Hell.

I imagine many people just burn up on re-entry.

Still, life is good. And television is better.

And poetry's not bad.

And God is underrated.

Gratitude waxes and wanes in poets, surges and ebbs just like the trash-filled ocean off certain parts of New Jersey.

Poetry will certainly return to you.

Bruegel Redux

Pennsylvania-style!

I met the painter Michael D. Rowe (no, he's not the Dirty Jobs guy!) through his writer wife Katherine some years back.

I remember being quite taken with his paintings and his working methods and enjoyed my visits to his studio.

Rowe has a love for quirky paintings like Bruegel's Flemish Proverbs and has done many paintings which similarly have text hidden in them (transformed into images) for the viewer to suss out.

I don't have a list of answers but I think you'll find this much easier than Bruegel's puzzle painting, since so many of Bruegel's are vanished locutions.

Netherlandish Proverbs (also called The Blue Cloak or The Topsy Turvy World) is a 1559 oil-on-oak-panel painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder which depicts a land populated with literal renditions of Flemish proverbs of the day. The picture is overflowing with references and most of the representations can still be identified; while many of the proverbs have either been forgotten or never made the transition to the English language, some are still in use. Proverbs were popular during Bruegel's time: a number of collections were published including a famous work by Erasmus. Frans Hogenberg had produced an engraving illustrating about 40 proverbs in around 1558 and Bruegel himself had painted a collection of Twelve Proverbs on individual panels by 1558 and had also produced Big Fish Eat Little Fish in 1556, but Netherlandish Proverbs is thought to be the first large scale painting on the theme. Rabelais depicted a land of proverbs in his novel Pantagruel soon after in 1564.

Bruegel's paintings have themes of the absurdity, wickedness and foolishness of mankind, and this painting is no exception. The picture was originally entitled The Blue Cloak or The Folly of the World which indicates he was not intending to produce a mere collection of proverbs but rather a study of human stupidity. Many of the people depicted show the characteristic blank features which Bruegel used to portray fools. His son, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, specialised in making copies of his father's work, and painted up to twenty copies of Netherlandish Proverbs. Not all versions of the painting, by father or son, show exactly the same proverbs, also differing in other details.



Detail

There are around 100 identifiable idioms in the scene (although Bruegel may have included others). Some are still in use today, amongst them: "swimming against the tide", "big fish eat little fish", "banging one's head against a brick wall" and "armed to the teeth", and there are some that are familiar if not identical to the modern English usage, such as "casting roses before swine". Many more have faded from use or have never been used in English, "having one's roof tiled with tarts" for example which meant to have an abundance of everything and was an image Bruegel would later feature in his painting of the idyllic Land of Cockaigne. The Blue Cloak referred to in the painting's original title is being placed on the man in the centre of the picture by his wife. This was indicative that she was cheating on him. Other proverbs indicate mankind's foolishness: a man fills in a pond after his calf has died, just above the central figure of the blue-cloaked man another man carries daylight in a basket. Some of the figures seem to represent more than one figure of speech (whether this was Bruegel's intention or not is unknown), such as the man shearing a sheep in the centre bottom left of the picture. He is sat next to a man shearing a pig, so represents the expression "one shears sheep and one shears pigs" meaning that one has the advantage over the other, but he may also represent the advice "shear them but don't skin them" meaning make the most of your assets.

Floater Final Sequence (1983) - Jane Veeder

I was watching Antiques Roadshow the other night, and there was this lovely piece of folk art--a one-legged bird sculpture in beaded wire.

I sort of fell in love with the design and wanted to find more works by the Finnish artist.

Here's some of what I found on Birger Kaipiainen.

The "Beaded Bird" (1962-67) shown at the left is striking as well, but the one on Antiques Roadshow was just gorge. The armature was more visible, and it had many orange beads with some ultramarine blue beads worked in. The beadwork was everywhere on that one and it was evocative of Native American art. The appraiser stated that originally Kaipiainen made all his own beads by hand, but later these were produced for him to spec. This one at the left here actually looks more Scandinavian. I like its rather dour dignity, but the exuberance of the other bird was what delighted me.

Isn't the "Violet Tree" (1968) cool as well? I think of Joe Brainard's love of pansies and violets, but in his art they tend to be vibrant and joyful; here these flowers are rendered so they appear rather skull-like (or is it just my perception that they appear to be clusters of little skulls?) and the ornamental moves towards the funebral.

It strikes me as a whimsical Vanitas. I realize that sounds a contradiction in terms, but the most interesting art usually is just that!

Cool Designer Who is No More.

Epigenetics

is the focus of this week's Nova.

This show is worth watching. It's one of the most promising fields of medical research, and a field which grew directly out of the huge advances made during the Human Genome Project.

"Miraculous" cures are now being realized as a result of epigenetic therapy.

Any disease with an epigenetic trigger (and there are many) may be amenable to therapeutic treatment in this manner.

It's all about the tags.

Clerks 2 Made Me Sad Last Night

I has seen it before and it's a big step down from Clerks, but mildly entertaining (as the milquetoast critics always say).

But last night it made me so sad.

I realized how old Dante really was in that.

The age is all over him.

Not that that's a bad thing.

It just made me sad.

Because he was still doing the twentysomething acting-style when he looked more a forty-something with possible health and/or psychiatric issues.

He looked like me, in other words.

Clerking will do that to one.

Or even being a well-regarded actor in a beloved "almost cult" film.

World's tiniest violin just broke.

Sorry.

It's like people who try to turn the clock back.

Today I was staring at a clock and it froze. The sweep hand got stuck.

I had the creepy feeling I had made it stop, because I was staring at it so intensely and my thought processes had sort of frozen.

It was 9:58 A.M.

The thermometer-red second hand remained stuck for about two minutes.

Then it continued on its merry Babylonian sexagesimal way.

I don't know if the clock does this every day or it was a fluke.

It's not my clock. It was a large one on a wall, clearly designed to look institutionally non-descript.

The way most people look walking down the street.

Does this mean I should play this as the daily number today?

You heard it here first.

If this were a Nicholas Cage film, it would probably refer to a Biblical verse or some mathematical relationship present in quantum reality which would predict some disaster or earth-shaking event.

And he would make that serious face to let you know how serious this 958 business really is.

I Think it Would be Funny

if there were a Bible verse that said, "It is what it is."

People would put it on linen pennants and calendars, napiery and curtains and t-shirts and such.

It would be engraved and chased on stainless steel tankards and pretty jewelry.

It would be in pretty italics and have chapter and verse citation after it.

This episode of Dr. Who on BBC America is righteous.

Yes, I used the dated "righteous."

If you get a chance to see it, check it out.

I think the episode is "Voyage of the Damned."

Dr. Who "episodes" are actually full-length (two hour) movies as this is.

It's basically a repeat of the Titanic disaster which takes place in outer space, and with a bunch of twists mixed in.

There's also a little borrowing from The Poseidon Adventure.

It's fun and Kylie is very cute in this role.

And the guy who plays Dr. Who is always sexy.

He reminds me of a clever marten. Maybe it's the hair.

I find the one inspector on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery (you know the show: the one that still uses Gorey's art for the opening and added Alan Cumming as host to make the show even gayer) very sexy.

Last episode, they had you wondering whether he does "go that way" and then had him making out (unbeknownst to him) with a killer tranny.

He was having a good time until the tranny turned out to be psychotic, and the killer everybody was seeking.

And then he still tried to save her, even after she had set him on fire (in more ways than one).

Maybe we should stop calling it "Masterpiece Mystery." It might increase the viewer if we got a little more accurate...like maybe Tabloidia-Style Mystery...or Tabloidia-Style Grits...

Trust me. It will work, PBS.

It's Immaterial

Another one of those cool bands whose album I loved and everybody's forgotten.

I consider the comment stream for the video a found poem...people are so conditioned now to hate her (by their parents usually if they are younger lol) that it's a total patellar reflex...would be good to work this into a play or something with people reading the comments...add music by Philip Glass or something...instant popsicle...

I think the problem a lot of people have with Yoko's music, is that they are listening to it with "western ears"; though it is rock, she is heavily influenced by Japanese Kabuki & Chinese Opera. Also, I think people are comparing it to,say,Helen Reddy or something. She's actually comparable to Bjork, Dagmar Krause and Patti Smith; one shouldn't compare apples to oranges.

That said, I find Yoko to be a talentless hack who achieved fame on John's coattails. I don't think her singing voice is great even though I do like this song. Yoko is not talentless. Prior and up to the point of meeting John Lennon she was a performance and conceptual artist.  She was one of the pioneer that laid a foundation for the diversification of contemporary art.

I've seen a great deal of Ono's "performance and conceptual art" and heard most of her "music" and I fins virtually all of it to be pretentious garbage. Different strokes, though, and if you enjoy what she does, I have no problem with that. But as far as I'm concerned, "talentless hack" is being kind.

( the two sams were arch rivals, both trying to sell as much as they could to yoko because they knew of her somewhat endless money ) she had an affair with sam green for pretty much the entire duration of john's bermuda trip - where he wrote his tracks for "double fantasy" - and it is unknown how long the affair had been going on

I had never agreed with John Lennon when he said Yoko was ahead of her time. I´m a believer after hearing the original version. I also think Petshop boys remake is not good enough. Hear the original.

After the success of "Kiss Kiss Kiss" (almost Top 100 in Bilboard) Yoko decided to try a new single of her own - the work on the single started shortly after the release of "Double Phantasy" and was finished the day John Lennon was shot.
