All I Got Was a Busy Signal. Urban Monkey Warfare Says Try This Number...

Second Method:

Call 101028817709889664

They will first repeat the phone number you are calling from and then repeat a bunch of zeros. The number at the end of the zero’s is what is important. If it is a 1 – you have never been tapped and are not presently tapped.
If it is a 2 it means you have been tapped in the past but no longer are tapped.

If it is a 3 it means you ARE being tapped presently and you need to be careful what you say over the phone.

But I was hesitant to dial this number, for fear I might be authorizing some sort of international charge, so I Googled it with "scam."

That's always a good tactic to use when you suspect you're getting a fake solicitation about your resume at one of the online job sites...although they're pretty damn easy to pick out. American Income Life is 96% of them, I think, under its many guises.

Anyway, this came up, indicating this is another urban legend...

Urban Legends: Phone tapping and how to spot one... #1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are tons of myths on the 'Net on how to tell if your phone is tapped. Was thinking about this after a landline call I recently placed to an overseas colleague where the static was horrible. No doubt, it was a poor connection, but that being said, it motivated me to do some research on the myths and legends of finding taps.

Not surprisingly, there are quite a few paranoid potheads out there who pass info around on spotting a tap. This one is interesting....

First Method

Call 202-543-9994

Listen for a steady monotone signal with no interrupts. That means you are not being tapped. If you hear any interruptions in the signal tone, then you are being listened to.

Second Method:

Call 101028817709889664

You want to hear a voice that says “1” or “2” that means no tap is underway. If you hear “3” or “4” you are tapped.

Curiously enough, 202-543-9994 is active. Didn't hear any static. The second number doesn't seem to work outside of the U.S.

Anyone else come across any amusing or interesting leads on how to spot a tap, or various urban legends?

Okay. So I guess I have to buy one of those stupid devices they sell online that tell you whether you're tapped or not.

Sigh.

Okay, G-Men, better make your move soon.

Because you're about to be busted.

If I stop blogging, check Guantanamo Bay.

They might reopen it for me.
