Barry Smylie: Monotypes

I received this in my email recently, and the name looked vaguely familiar.

I was trying to remember where I knew the person or the name from.

I believe it might have been from the period of time when I was on the SUNY Buffalo listserv.

Anyway, he sent an invite to see his monotypes from the early 90s.

I did, and I looked at all of them, and liked quite a few.

Here's the link in case you want to check them out.

Barry Smylie: Monotypes

Some of the works seem to be working out problems in optics. Others seem to be quoting mathematical ideas (often set theory) while still others seem to be limning models from communication theory.

The works seem obliquely social...via the obscuration of semiotic, which is present in so many pieces.

Is it just me, or do you find the artist's signature distracting in these pieces? It's not just this artist. It annoys me in many paintings, drawings, prints, etc...
