Funny, it had disappeared for years. I used to do that. Maybe the meds brought it back. I know where to place my tongue on the upper palate to make an eth, I atthyure you.
Anyway, watching the Ocean Blue's last video I realize it's sort of easy to parody or make fun of. Like the "I'm making a V with my arms and looking mysterious" or the "I'm very pensive and portrait-like" gestures and stares and such.
So I was amused by how the commenters picked up on the gayness of the video (I mean "gayness" in vernacular kid usage) and fought it out.
These nasty comment streams always crack me up.
The singer of the band was/is not gay. That's just a haircut, people.
The keyboardist was gay (think I'm remembering the right one) and there was a tempest in a teapot when he left the band and charges of homophobia flew about, but I don't think that was the issue.
In fact, I remember David mentioning this in one of our conversations obliquely and he was very gentlemanly about it, and regretful.
I think they all fetched up later, anyhow. That band member went on to do some great producing and writing and have some success of his own anyway.
But I think this comment stream is funny. Although, to be fair, I like seeing Iceland but the band suffered from bad direction here.
The Ocean Blue creates its own sort of universe which is only like pop in some ways.
People keep saying "they weren't marketing correctly" or make other charges as to why they didn't break massively. But I think they have the greatly appreciative cult audience the music was meant to draw--and that's in many countries even to this day.
I'm not saying it wasn't a disaster when SIRE cut all those artist (even Morrissey, right?) at that point in time. So many artists were foundering, and didn't get resigned.
The Ocean Blue took the noble route and decided to self-market (out of their old hometown, Hershey PA) and made a valiant effort of it, but without the distribution isn't that sort of quixotic gesture doomed to failure--no, not failure because albums were still being produced--but doomed to loss of audience anyway.
Who knows. I'm sure Schelzel never loss his gifts for songwriting. They're probably improved. I didn't even Google him or the band to see what's new so I guess I'm a terrible fan.
When the soldier in Afghanistan asks if the guy has a crush on him, he sounds almost hopeful, doesn't he?
